Madeira flight diverted

Was your Madeira flight diverted?

Confirm the airline’s onward plan before paying for a separate journey. These are the next three steps.

Do these next

A diversion — Do these next

  1. Ask where the airline will take you

Confirm whether onward transport or another flight to the agreed destination is being arranged.

  2. Understand how the diversion is treated

The treatment depends on the alternative airport and whether onward transport is provided.

Read passenger guidance (opens in a new tab)
  3. Book separately only after you understand the airline plan

    OptionalCheck availability

A separate transfer can help, but availability and reimbursement are not guaranteed.

Why we don’t show live flight status

No flight-tracking source a browser can reach carries dependable arrival data for Madeira. We checked seven. Showing you something that might be wrong on the day it matters most is worse than showing you nothing.

Your airline knows first, and it is the only one that owes you anything. The airport’s own board is the next best thing.

What we checked, and what each one said

Checked from a browser on this site. The notes below are technical and are in English only.

  • OpenSky Network (live states)HTTP status: 200

Returns real traffic anonymously, but only to their own origin. A browser on this site is blocked by CORS.

  • OpenSky Network (arrivals)HTTP status: 403

Anonymous access refused: "You cannot access historical flights".

  • AviationStackHTTP status: 401

CORS-open but requires an access key, which a static site cannot hide.

  • AeroDataBox (RapidAPI)HTTP status: 401

Reflects the caller origin but requires a RapidAPI key.

  • Flightradar24HTTP status: 302

No public API, no CORS header, and the terms forbid it.

  • adsb.lolHTTP status: 200

Free and keyless, but sends no CORS header, so a browser cannot read it.

  • airplanes.liveHTTP status: 200

Free, keyless and browser-reachable, but carries position only — no destination, schedule or diversion flag. It cannot distinguish a diversion from a go-around or an overflight.

Were you owed compensation?

Disruption caused by weather usually does not qualify — Madeira wind counts as an extraordinary circumstance. The airline still owes you care, re-routing and the cost of getting to Funchal. A check is free either way, and the airline has to prove the cause.

A long delay or a cancellation can carry a payout under EU rules. A free eligibility check tells you in a couple of minutes.
