It is also the driest place on the island — 596 mm of rain a year against Santana’s 1,383 mm on the 1971–2000 normals — which is why the cloud sitting on the ridge above the city so often never arrives.

Getting there
Everything above is walkable from the cathedral except Praia Formosa, which is a long walk west along the promenade or a short ride. The island’s bus network is a Funchal network first — almost every route on it begins or ends here.
