Calheta

The imported-sand beach, the marina, the arts centre above it, and the west’s reliable afternoon sun — with a live camera to check before you commit.

The first of the two engineered beaches, opened in 2004 and put back after the April 2008 storms stripped it — 2,800 tonnes of sand landed in a single delivery. The rest of this municipality’s shoreline is what the island actually looks like: Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar are pebble, are not designated bathing waters at all, and carry the swell that made them surf villages.
